HBO is cutting the cord. One of the first premium cable services is offering a streaming only subscription for viewers. The stand-alone service will be available in 2015.

HBO wants to appeal to the 10 million “cord cutting” homes that no longer have cable or satellite, but use broadband to watch TV.

According to HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler, “We will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top HBO service in the US. We will explore models with new partners. There are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”

HBO is currently available for phone, tablets and computers – but only for those with a cable or satellite subscription. No word now on what the streaming only subscription will cost.
